The seven-year drought in California officially ended this year, but an estimated 1 million Californians don’t have clean drinking water. And only 17 of the state’s 58 counties have local water systems that all comply with state and federal drinking water standards.Some Californians are dealing with the crisis by purchasing drinking water from one of 9,200 water vending machines. Often located in strip malls, they dispense filtered tap water for between 25 to 35 cents per gallon, according to The Guardian and other media outlets.
This price is much higher than what residents and business owners pay for tap water, and much lower than the cost of sealed bottles sold in stores. But news outlet Voice of San Diego reports that state inspections of these vending machines are sporadic at best.
“The best way to know your tap water is safe to drink is by using a water purifier in your home,” said Allen Baler, owner of Nashville, Tenn.-based 4Patriots LLC.
“No matter where you live, there’s a good chance you have some contaminants in the water that comes out of your faucets. You owe it to yourself and your family to make sure your tap water is safe for drinking and cooking.”
