Social media's effect on our presence

Social media has become so strong in recent years that it has changed the demands of aesthetic surgery accordingly.

According to the October 2019 global digital report published by the Datareportal website, the number of social media users in the world has reached 3.66 billion. The role played by such a great power in people's preferences is increasing day by day too. Experts warn those who wish to undergo aesthetic operations, wanting to resemble celebrities and influencers that they see on social media.

Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Specialist Dr. Selçuk Yazan made explanations about the applications made with these demands, “ It would be wrong to perform an operation without analyzing the patient’s psychology and make decisions according to what’s popular instead of what’s needed” he said. Stating that it is not ethical for doctors to accept such aesthetic surgeries, he emphasizes that operations should be performed according to ethical rules and not according to trends and fashion. Aesthetic surgeries should be decided according to the needs of the people, not from social media. Prior to admission, the patient's condition should be evaluated psychologically and the operation process should begin. ”

Both mental and physical fitness are essential

Stating that aesthetic operations have positive effects on the patients and that people of all ages and genders want to be liked, Dr. Selçuk Yazan “People who love themselves believe that people in front of them also love and value them. This also helps to eliminate many problems, especially between couples. The person believes that his / her partner or lover will change the way he / she dreams to change in order to satisfy the desire to be liked. However, sometimes this can be a mistake and surgery can be disappointing. At this point, it is important that the person is both mentally and physically fit for the aesthetic operation.

As social media has increased the impact of our lives, the likelihood of appreciation has increased, and some applications may make people seem to have a body they don't have. Dr. Selçuk Yazan:” The perfected photographs create the perception that everyone is like this. Young people in particular should know that what appears is not 'real'. After stripping from the tension and anxiety created by the perception of 'perfect beauty', the decision should be made. The patient should be questioned by considering the age, social environment, family, physical and psychological evaluations and then should be decided whether or not the patient would be suitable for cosmetic surgery after multifaceted approach and examinations. ”

Psychological effect should not be ignored

Aesthetic operations are often done to change the physical characteristics of people who see themselves as flaws, but the presence of psychological and sociological effects should not be ignored, he said. Yazan stated that “despite of the reason, the operation’s phycological affect should not be forgotten. People who have problems of self-confidence, who are unhappy with their appearance in the mirror and who are not at peace with themselves can change these emotions through aesthetic operations. Therefore, it is necessary to accept that aesthetics and psychology are inseparable.”
