The massage therapy industry is currently worth $12.1 billion, which has grown year over year for the past decade. It is estimated that there are almost 400,000 massage therapists and massage school students throughout the U.S. Unfortunately, there is also a darker side of the massage industry that is tarnishing the reputation of legitimate massage businesses.The Dark Side of the Massage Business is something most people know about, but few discuss. In an effort to raise more awareness to this growing issue, Massage by Patrice has launched a campaign highlighting this problematic side of the business.
“Most people have seen the seemingly innocuous signs on the side of the highway that advertise spas in the coming miles,” stated owner Patrice Thompson. “In most cases, there is something about these types of signs that is off. It may be a message that reads “Truckers Welcome,” or other shady information. While roadside massage parlors are legitimate businesses, there are many that are actually covering for a more nefarious business.”
Unfortunately, these illegal massage parlors are hurting legitimate businesses in the local area. This is because the stigma associated with the nefarious side of the business. Many patrons who are interested in legitimate massage services are hesitant to seek them due to the worry of whether or not the business offers legal services.
“The fact is, guilt by association is a real thing in the massage industry,” continued Thompson. “While it isn’t fair, it impacts legitimate businesses throughout the U.S. and something that every licensed practitioner has to face and deal with. My goal is to provide more public awareness about the illegitimate massage parlors and they damage they have caused those in the business who are honest and trying to make a living.”
Being aware of the problem is a start, but to get rid of these illegal businesses hiding under the title of a massage parlor patrons have to take action. This is the only way the issues are going to be eradicated.
