Letter from MHSHRM Board of Directors Regarding Racial Equality

Share this news:

Mile High SHRM is a diverse community of the brightest human resources professionals in the Denver metro area and we proudly stand in solidarity in the fight for social justice and racial equality.

There is nothing new about systemic racism. Yet, recent events of social injustice in communities of color and around the United States more broadly – including but not limited to the killing of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and several others – are shining a much-needed spotlight on issues deeply rooted in our country. As Human Resources professionals, we are the “people-people” of an organization. This notion of being for the people holds HR to an elevated standard. Not only does HR support a business’ most precious stakeholders, but they also have the power and platform to create change within it.

Many of our employees are angry. Many are scared. Many are hurting. As a community, we must strive to move beyond a place of sympathy to empathy, from ‘talking about the problem’ to creating real change. We must set clear intentions and put them into impactful and meaningful actions. More specifically, it is hard to discuss this topic without looking inside our own house.

To that end, as our first intentional act to address our own organization and our response, we have made the decision to change our former Diversity manager role, into a new Director of Equity and Inclusion role. A goal for this new position is to audit our organization and operations, and make recommendations on how we can serve our entire community even more effectively.

We encourage everyone to take this time and consider channeling energy and discomfort towards advocacy for positions and organizations you believe in. Now is a time where we can all add our voice to the causes which matter to us. Send a letter. Leave a voicemail. Send a tweet. No matter the specifics of which organization, or for which specific cause you choose to champion, change is possible when we all stand up and speak up with clear intent.

We certainly do not have all the answers. MHSHRM is listening. MHSHRM is here to support you and will do what is in our power to achieve the equality and justice every person richly deserves in life…not only because it will create better workplaces, but because it is the right thing to do.
