Rocky McElhaney Law Firm is pleased to announce Kennedei Harris, an incoming Freshman at Spelman College, is the 2021 recipient of the Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship. About Scholarship winner Kennedei Harris
Kennedei Harris was a junior at Lee County High School in Georgia in March of 2020 when she lost her sister and father to COVID-19 within two days of each other. Before the year was out, she would lose her aunt as well.
Despite personal tragedies capable of crippling the spirits of most adults, teenage Kennedei Harris found strength in her faith and her relationships with her surviving family members. She worked hard to remain an exemplary student and National Honor Society member, pushing herself to excel at school despite her losses. She continued to pursue her commitment to serving her community, working with her church on choir outreach programs, tutoring low-income, at-risk students, and distributing school items to those in need.
In her scholarship application, Kennedei spoke about her goal to be the type of leader who promotes and embodies the definition of change and difference. As her school counselor stated, “Kennedei displays a sense of maturity beyond her years. She is unapologetically herself even when it may not be understood. This trait sets her apart from her peers and will continue to set her apart in a culture where everyone wants to conform.”
Kennedei will enter Spellman Collage this fall as a Freshman and will pursue training to become a teacher, a role she believes will allow her change the world, one student at a time.
About the Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship
The Max McElhaney Memorial Educational Scholarship was founded in 2015 in honor of Rocky McElhaney’s late uncle, Max McElhaney. Each year, the Firm awards $2,500 to a full-time student enrolled at an accredited university or college who is majoring in English or History. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit proof of enrollment, an essay on the student’s “gold standard of love,” a personal statement, a statement of financial need, and at least one recommendation. The firm chooses a winner in August and awards the Scholarship in September.
The firm is now accepting applications for the 2022 scholarship award.
