James L. McCutchen, J.D., LL.M. has been named one of the "Legal Elite of the Midlands" for 2019 by Columbia Business Monthly. A Principal of McCutchen McLean & VanSyckel, LLC and a leading South Carolina tax attorney, McCutchen is a distinguished graduate of the Charleston School of Law who subsequently earned a Master of Laws in Taxation from the Georgetown University School of Law.The annual Columbia Business Monthly Legal Elite of the Midlands awards highlight the attorneys in the region who, in the judgments of their peers, excel the most in their chosen areas of practice. McCutchen was named a 2019 Legal Elite of the Midlands member in both the "Corporate Mergers & Acquisitions Law" and "Tax & Estate Planning Law" categories, making him one of a select few to achieve such a twofold distinction.
Unlike many other legal industry awards, the Columbia Business Monthly Legal Elite of the Midlands honors are based solely on the nominations and votes of practicing attorneys in the area, with no payments for inclusion ever being solicited or accepted. McCutchen's career as a prominent, award-winning South Carolina tax lawyer in private practice follows upon a similarly glittering stint as an attorney for the state Department of Revenue, where he earned seven "Director's Shining Star" awards for his accomplishments.

After graduating from Charleston's West Ashley High School in 2002, McCutchen went on to the College of Charleston, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in Criminal Justice. Even as an undergraduate, he displayed an undeniable aptitude for legal reasoning and argument, as seen in his selection by the American Mock Trial Association as an All-Regional and All-National Best Attorney.
With a J.D. from the Charleston School of Law and an L.L.M. from Georgetown in hand, McCutchen became an attorney for the South Carolina Department of Revenue, where he learned many valuable lessons about how taxation and regulation impact the state's residents and businesses. That background has helped McCutchen quickly become one of South Carolina's most esteemed tax lawyers, as the recently released 2019 Legal Elite of the Midlands awards make clear.
