Driving at night or under inclement weather conditions requires extra vigilance behind the wheel. Reduced visibility or slick roads can impair the driver’s ability to make decisions in a timely fashion or impact the control their have over their vehicle. In 2011 20% of accidents in New Mexico occurred at night, and 8% during weather events. The Szantho Law Firm says that with more attention during these times the numbers could see a reduction.“The majority of accidents in New Mexico in 2011 occurred during clear and daytime conditions,” says Andras Szantho, founder of the Szantho Law Firm. “However the dangers of driving during adverse weather, or at night, particularly along unlit roads, should be addressed so that people can travel safely.”
In 2011 8% of New Mexico auto accidents occurred during weather events such as rain, snow, fog dust and more. Yet, fully 3% took place over the span of just 8 days in February and December.
“During bad weather we always recommend that drivers prepare for slick or icy roads by giving themselves extra time so that they are not forced to rush in dangerous conditions,” says Szantho.
Driving at night comprised more than 20% of accidents in 2011, with the numbers for lit and unlit roads being similar in terms of total number of crashes. However the report did display a wide discrepancy in terms of accident severity, with crashes occurring on darkened roads having higher incidents of injury and fatality.
“When driving at night try to stick to lit streets as much as possible to reduce the risk of a serious accident,” explains Szantho.
“Simple changes can have a big impact,” concludes Szantho. “Slowing down, ensuring you have enough room to stop and increasing visibility whenever possible are all key to reducing accidents during bad weather and at night.”
