Sentinel Pointe Retirement Community has announced a new expansion of their activities roster with a program targeted at teaching residents breakdancing. The program will be led by none other than former breakdancing and film star Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers ('Turbo' in 1984’s Breakin’).The partnership is aimed at helping residents expand their ability to perform choreographed dance moves for upcoming social media videos the retirement community has planned.
"With the rise of memes like Harlem Shake and the whole Lip Dub phenomenon, we felt like we had to step up our game a bit. We have Emergency Preparedness, Medical Preparedness...we view this as Viral Video Preparedness."
All residents are being asked to participate, with a select group that will be designated as the "A Players". This will allow the marketing team to quickly assemble a qualified and highly trained dance team for whatever the next viral video gravy train may be.
Heading up the program is Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers, who will be relocating temporarily to Grand Rapids to get the program off the ground. "I’m very excited about the partnership to be honest...this is a way I can give back to a group of great people, and share my knowledge of popping and locking and head spins. Obviously all residents won’t be able to start in at that level...but I think with time we can get there."
Mr. Chamber is slated to stay through June, with an optional extension based on the success of the program. Marketing director Laurie Duvernay is very optimistic on the longevity of the program. "I think with our enthusiasm and Michael’s dancing expertise, we could leverage our residents into a highly trained dance troupe capable of competing with any of the local retirement communities, if not at a national level."
