Claddagh Design Celebrating 10 Years in Business

Share this news:

This year, Cork-based jewellery designer and silversmith Eileen Moylan marks her tenth year in business with her company Claddagh Design.

Eileen set up Claddagh Design to create contemporary Irish jewellery, inspired by Ireland’s past. Each design is individually handcrafted in her workshop in County Cork. With the onset of the pandemic, Eileen recognised she would need to adapt. She began to explore creative ways in which she could help and support her customers.

Supporting Local Business
Eileen Moylan still vividly remembers the moment her first order came through on her online shop.

“After all the work we had done creating the collection and setting up the website, it was brilliant to see the first order come in for one of our men’s Ogham tie slides. Simply knowing that our website worked and our jewellery could now be seen from anywhere in the world was such a great feeling”

Celebrating 10 Years in Business
For the past decade, Jewellery Designer and Silversmith Eileen Moylan has been transforming and reimagining historic Irish symbols into contemporary pieces. Each design is skilfully handcrafted in precious metals of silver and gold. With engagements and weddings postponed, the past year has been a worrying time for every business in the wedding sector.

Eileen recognised the need to pivot the business. She began sharing the beautiful pieces she was working on from her workshop through her website, Instagram and Facebook pages. Irish businesses have noticed a marked increase in the number of consumers supporting small online businesses throughout the pandemic and Claddagh design is no exception. From May 2010, business slowly began picking up and today, Eileen’s small team is busier than they ever were.

New Line of Engagement Rings
Eileen’s new designs combine precious metals with natural and lab-grown diamonds to create unique pieces for contemporary living. The inspiration behind the collection was inspired by a desire to delicately balance contemporary design with historic symbols of the past. An ode to Ireland's metal craftsmanship and iconic heritage designs.

Sprinkled with subtle nuanced references to Irish art, the collection reinvents historic symbols into perfectly crafted rings for the modern proposal. With intricate Celtic knotwork as well as the much-loved symbols of Claddagh representing love, loyalty and friendship, the pieces are both symbolic and meaningful.

Increasing Demand for Lab-Grown Diamonds
Although Eileen has worked with both ethically sourced and synthetic diamonds for over 20 years, demand for lab-grown alternatives to diamonds has never been greater. Irish consumers are more aware than ever of the environmental and humanitarian costs of mined diamonds.

“It is brilliant to see customers informed and interested in where the stones and metal for their jewellery come from. We have always made sure our workshop was as environmentally friendly as possible by recycling all our precious metals and only buying from reputable suppliers,” says Eileen. “Thanks to our stone suppliers and the much stricter regulations our diamonds have always been guaranteed ethically sourced and conflict-free. While the quality of the materials we use is very important to us we can also have a clear conscience knowing they are guaranteed to be ethically sourced”

As well as ethically sourced and lab-grown diamonds, all of the jewellery Eileen creates in her workshop in County Cork is handcrafted using 100% recycled precious metals; white gold, yellow gold, platinum and palladium
