Bethel Community Reports on Leo's Fight to Save His Life

A 30-year-old male, Leo has been on dialysis due to kidney failure and his kidneys no longer work even with regular dialysis. He needs a kidney promptly, HelpLeo.org announces

When a person's kidneys no longer function properly, they are unable to filter blood effectively. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders, 468,000 individuals undergo dialysis as a result of their kidney disease, and Leo is one such individual. Bethel Community is coming together to ask individuals for a kidney donation to help this amazing man regain his health.

"Born and raised in Ukraine, Leo is a 30-year-old man who arrived in the United States several years ago. People love him for his generosity, his compassion, and his humble demeanor. He goes out of his way to assist others, yet will never ask for assistance for himself. We are calling on individuals to donate money for a kidney so this amazing man can live a long, healthy life," Yuri Kreyman, spokesperson for Bethel Community, explains.

Sadly, this disease often isn't detected until it reaches an advanced stage, and more individuals die from this condition than do from breast or prostate cancer. More than 47,000 individuals in America lost their lives to this disease in 2013. While more individuals are now becoming organ donors, this is not enough to help these individuals.

"Leo has spent the past two years on dialysis to address his kidney failure. This was helping for a time, but his kidneys no longer function in any way. They were functioning at 25 percent, but we recently discovered this has changed. He has played it tough and can no longer do so. Leo can no longer eat, as food raises his blood pressure significantly, and most people cannot imagine this type of life," Kreyman continues.

Medicine has come a long way over the years, but kidney disease has yet to be eradicated. Men are more likely to die from kidney failure, although these numbers have also declined in recent years. In the past 21 years, mortality rates for dialysis patients have declined by 28 percent. For those fortunate enough to find a compatible donor, mortality rates have declined by 40 percent. Give Leo better odds by helping with his treatment.

"Regular dialysis is no longer working for Leo. He must spend 15 hours of every day pumping fluid in and out of a tube to keep the kidneys functioning. The procedure is painful, yet Leo is not ready to give up. His mother's heart is breaking as she watches her son go through this, and they are desperately seeking help. Please help save this man by becoming a living donor and/or donating money to help offset the cost of surgery. Any help is greatly appreciated," Kreyman states.
