Bel Marra Health comments on a study proving the relationship between cholesterol and cognitive function.

Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is weighing in on a study examining the correlation between cholesterol and memory loss.

Heidelberg University in Germany has released new research showing strong indications that increased levels of cholesterol can negatively impact memory and other cognitive functions in those who are aging. “It’s a bit odd to hear ‘cholesterol’ and ‘memory loss’ in the same sentence because we don’t naturally make that association,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “But an increase in cholesterol can have so many adverse effects that it’s really not surprising that cognitive decline is one of them.”

The buildup of bad cholesterol ultimately clogs the arteries and makes it difficult for blood to flow through. This forces the heart to do even more work, which, in turn, can lead to some fairly serious health repercussions. The study also found that lowering cholesterol was proven to work effectively in those who have a genetic predisposition to Alzheimer’s by slowing down the inevitable cognitive decline.

“Cholesterol occurs naturally in the body,” Dr. Marchione continues. “But it’s when we ingest too much bad cholesterol that it begins to get problematic for our health.”

Blood samples and medical data from two previous cognitive studies of close to 2,000 participants were used to derive the correlation between cholesterol and cognitive health. In the end, it was found that actively working to lower cholesterol levels will have a positive impact when it comes to memory and improved cognitive function.

“The new information revealed in this study should be further incentive for those entering their senior years—and even those well into their senior years—to be much more conscious of what they eat,” Dr. Marchione concludes.
