Bel Marra Health comments on a recent study about the effects of coffee on the colon.

Bel Marra Health (www.BelMarraHealth.com), a company that offers high-quality, specially formulated vitamins and nutritional products, is reacting to research showing that coffee improves digestion.

Researchers at Georgia Regents University conducted a study to determine if the pretence of coffee as a laxative is sound, and if so, why coffee causes that chemical reaction. A total of 12 adults were monitored for 10 hours after being given a burger with 1,000 calories, a caffeinated drink, a decaffeinated drink, and hot water. The burger caused the most activity in the colon according to the results of the study, but the drink containing caffeine was right behind. “Many coffee drinkers already believe coffee is causing them to go to the bathroom,” says Dr. Victor Marchione, spokesperson for Bel Marra Health. “However, it’s important to have scientific research to back up these theories so we can learn about the specific causes and consequences of why this happens.”

According to the research, drinking caffeine creates similar colon activity to eating a 1000-calorie burger. The results also showed that caffeine is far more potent than water or decaffeinated products in stirring bowel movement; in fact, researchers saw that caffeine increased colon activity 60% more than hot water and beat the decaffeinated product by 23%.

Several theories have been devised as to why caffeine is so effective in causing bowel movement. The first theory is that coffee stimulates hormones, which leads to acid secreting into the stomach, a reaction that typically leads to increased colon activity. Another theory is slightly more psychological—that using the bathroom in the morning has become routine for most people, and adding coffee to a morning meal helps to provoke that routine.

“A person is more likely to have to use the bathroom in the morning, regardless of any external conditions, due to having been asleep for several hours,” Dr. Marchione concludes. “By adding coffee and some form of food to the mix, it’s easier to see how that pattern continues.”
