Carolina Speech Pathology has a comprehensive Two Day FEES® Training Course coming to Englewood, CO January 31 – February 1, 2014.

Hosted and held at Swedish Medical Center located at 501 E. Hampden Ave Englewood, Colorado 80113, Carolina Speech Pathology will be training participants in the use of Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES®) to evaluate and manage oropharyngeal dysphagia, a swallowing disorder, January 31 - February 1, 2014. The event is sponsored by Carolina Speech Pathology and ProCourseCEU's.com and will take place in the 2nd Floor Conference Center Room Spruce C.

This program provides an opportunity to develop an understanding of the FEES® procedure and gain experience interpreting FEES® for the evaluation and management of oropharyngeal dysphagia. The highly specialized instructors from Carolina Speech Pathology, Stuart Bradley, MS,CCC-SLP, Selena Reece, MS, CCC-SLP and Rachel Walt, MS, CCC-SLP will also provide information on how the procedure compares to the Modified Barium Swallow Study, as well as discuss the manner in which to start a FEES® program at the participants’ home facility.

This program is available and offered for 1.5 CEUs (Introductory Level, Professional Area.). This is an ideal class for those participants starting out in endoscopy and we encourage them to attend.

Some of the learning outcomes from this course include:
- Differentiating between a normal and an abnormal swallow using flexible endoscopy
- Identifying, interpreting and applying appropriate therapeutic intervention during the performance of a FEES® exam
- Differentiating between the use of endoscopy vs. modified barium swallow to manage patients with dysphagia
- Performing at an introductory level of skill in passing the endoscope safely and demonstrate how to properly position the scope to obtain ideal view during the examination

“Peer Reviewed literature continues to show FEES® as an equally or more effective technique to perform swallow studies for many reasons, including system portability, logistical ease of use and patient comfort aspects”, says Stuart Bradley, President of Carolina Speech Pathology.

“With the continued national shortage of Barium, hospitals that perform swallow tests using the old standard MBSS technique are having to ration their supplies, resulting in needed tests being postponed or cancelled and patients not getting the care they need. Hospitals and medical facilities need to have a FEES® System in use to avoid having to deny their patients the testing and evaluation they need”, Stuart explains.
