Agein Corporation, a leading anti-aging company, weighs in on academic study that shows link between Sugary Soda drink and DNA Aging.

Agein.com, the Internet’s premier anti-aging web site focusing on anti-aging tips, news, and advice from some of the foremost experts in the industry, is weighing in on an academic study that shows, for the first time, a link between drinking sugar-laced soda and accelerated DNA aging, which could leave the body vulnerable to chronic diseases in a similar manner to the effects of smoking.

According to scientists from the University of California San Francisco who studied more than 5,300 people, those who drank eight ounces of soda daily had DNA changes typical of cells 1.9 years old, while those who drank a 20-ounce bottle of soda every day experienced what corresponded to 4.6 years of additional aging. Specifically, those who drank larger amounts of soda tended to have shorter telomeres—protective DNA at the end of cell chromosomes—in their white blood cells. “While the study only shows an association between sugary drinks and DNA aging and does not prove that soda causes cell aging, these are still significant results,” says Dr. Kevin J. McLaughlin, Agein.com’s anti-aging and health and wellness specialist. “It’s important to note that the researchers didn’t see any association between telomere length and diet soda intake.”

Dr. McLaughlin explains that previous research has associated the length of telomeres within white blood cells with the human lifespan. Short telomeres have also been linked with tissue damage and inflammation of the skin, which can cause wrinkles and sagging, and chronic diseases associated with aging, such as coronary heart disease and diabetes.

He notes that this study adds further proof to the growing body of evidence showing that healthy lifestyle choices have a direct impact on cellular aging and the skin. In addition to reducing sugar intake from beverages high in sugar (e.g. soda, wine, and beer), consider taking a supplement that contains omega-3, which helps support collagen function.

“When it comes to youthful, healthy-looking skin, it’s important to implement a daily skincare regimen,” Dr. McLaughlin adds. “To prevent the visible signs of aging, use a personal care product clinically proven to improve skin tone, reduce fine lines around the eyes, and improve the appearance of deep wrinkles. Look for an anti-wrinkle moisturizing cream that contains gentle ingredients such as Alpine rose extract and Matrixyl 3000.”

Matrixyl 3000 is a protein fragment, or peptide, that has been found to stimulate collagen production, reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, and improve the user’s skin tone. In one particular clinical study, Matrixyl 3000 was shown to improve skin tone and smoothness by 15% and reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles by 45%. “In another clinical study, Alpine rose stem cell technology increased the vitality of the skin by 75%,” Dr. McLaughlin concludes. “It also was responsible for improving overall skin tone and strengthening the skin’s barrier against environmental stress.” (Source: “PhytoCellTec Alp Rose Charges skin stem cell resistance,” Mibelle Biochemistry Group web site; http://www.mibellebiochemistry.com/pdfs/Web_Brochure_PCT_Alp_Rose.pdf, last accessed October 27, 2014.)
