14th Dalai Lama, the chief lama and a globally revered religious figure, is going to pay a visit to Europe soon and he is expected to share his thoughts and suggestions on the worldwide refugee crisis.Coincidentally, Dalai Lama seems to have a special interest in the topic of refugees. In May of last year, in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, a German newspaper, Dalai Lama astonished the world by saying “too many refugees are seeking asylum in Europe”. “Europe, for example Germany, cannot become an Arab country”, he underscored. Dalai Lama’s upcoming Europe tour comes at a time when the refugee crisis has already loomed large on European countries. “As is known to all, Dalai Lama is a refugee himself, having been spent most of his lifetime in exile. Dalai Lama has been trying to run his refugee community, and has even created a specific administrative system in the hope that the system would continue operating even after his demise. He has made great effort to emphasize to his followers in exile the importance of preserving the culture and tradition of Tibet, has educated his followers to hold together and try to go back to Tibet. For this cause, he has toured across the length and breadth of the world seeking for support, and has turned into a global mouthpiece for refugees and their unique problems.
“Since his leaving Tibet, 50 years have passed, and Dalai Lama is already in his eighties now. The supporters who followed him have propagated his teaching to the third and fourth generations. During the time of enjoying the so-called religious freedom, they also suffered huge survival pressure,” the source added.
“They neither have legal residency nor equal citizenship as local people. They just have limited freedom and limited earning opportunities in industries such as agriculture, commerce and services. Most of them still struggle to maintain a basic life. In order to have a better political environment and employment opportunities, they have migrated to different parts of the world”, he told the press.
One of the press representatives from Germany, who is going to host His Holiness Dalai Lama and make arrangements for his press conference said, “The descendants of these exiles have never been back to Tibet, and they have poor understanding of the traditional culture, and some of them cannot even speak the Tibetan language. No matter how much effort be made to salvage his people believing in the Tibetan Buddhism, and no matter how much the host countries cooperated, in an exiled community, the religious belief as a whole weakens. What is even worse is that their spiritual leader Dalai Lama is getting old and they don’t have a successor with worldwide relevance to represent them.”
“If these exiles are not received back by the Government of China, they will keep wandering until they become extinct. Perhaps that’s the reason why Dalai Lama said that the refugees from the Middle-East should leave Europe. It’s a vision expressed from a long-term perspective inspired from his own experience”, the German press representative maintained.
"The goal should be that they return and help rebuild their countries", this is what Dalai Lama said last time when talking about the refugee crisis in Europe. In September 2015, during his visit to Britain, Dalai Lama appealed nations to help people who are “crying, starving and asking for help”.
