A new report from SPF Insurance Services, Best California Maternity Insurance Plans in 2017, shows the best health plans that minimize the total cost to have a baby in 2017. The total cost includes prenatal, delivery costs, and the monthly insurance premiums.Being pregnant and in the wrong medical plan can be costly. In San Diego, the total cost difference between the lowest and highest cost plans is $6,155. In San Francisco, the difference is $6,732. “Paying the equivalent of an extra $500/mo is challenging for most families”, according to SPF founder Tim Thompson, “that’s why we analyze maternity plans each year and identify the top health plans for maternity in all 19 regions of California.”
Common sense tells us that a Bronze health plan is the worst California health plan to have if you’re pregnant. With a Bronze plan, you are responsible for the full out of pocket maximum ($6,800) before the insurance company begins paying for delivery costs. The reality is that the popular Silver plans are the worst for maternity purposes, and over 65 % of Californians are enrolled in a Silver plan.

The creation of this report involved analyzing and totaling the typical costs associated with 9 months of prenatal care, the delivery costs, and the monthly premiums, to determine what the total out-of-pocket costs would be for each health plan.
