Phyllis Kapp, owner of Waxlander Gallery, will be attending Tobias Picker’s latest opera in San Francisco on September 18th with Henriette Simon Picker and Other Notable Figures.

Phyllis Kapp, owner of Waxlander Art Gallery & Sculpture Garden on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, New Mexico, has been invited to attend the premiere of Tobias Picker’s newest work on September 18th in San Francisco. Waxlander Gallery is in its 29th year and Kapp is not only the owner, but also a contributing artist to the gallery. In 2012, Kapp’s work was ushered into the Peoria Riverfront Museum in Illinois. This landmark event speaks to the timelessness of her body of work, as it has been included in the permanent collection – next to many works by nationally and internationally known artists. Achieving this feat is said to be one of the most exciting and gratifying moments for an artist and it was well deserved.

Picker is one of the United States’ most beloved classical composers and was recently commissioned by the world-renown San Francisco Opera to bring Dolores Claiborne, based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name, to their stage.

By age 30, Picker had been the recipient of numerous notable awards and accolades, including a Charles Ives Scholarship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in May 2012. Picker has been composing notable works in classical music for more than thirty years and is perhaps best known for four operas: Emmeline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Therese Raquin and An American Tragedy. These works have been enjoyed in opera houses across the country and worldwide.

Kapp is greatly looking forward to this landmark event, as she has a deep appreciation for classical music and the arts, and she is also honored to support Picker in his latest accomplishment. Kapp will have the opportunity to attend the opera with the mother of this noted musician, Henriette Simon Picker and other notable public figures.

Henriette Picker is best known for her accomplishments in the shoe design industry. She began her career in 1935 at the age of 16, when she was hired as the first woman shoe designer at I. Miller. By the 50s and 60s, H.S. Picker was operating two shoe design and manufacturing companies. Her shoe designs were even illustrated by many famous artists, including Andy Warhol. H.S. Picker, however, always wanted to be a painter, which is what she enjoys pursuing now. Waxlander recently brought the artist on as a prized part of their extensive repertoire and is delighted to see her one-of-a-kind work in the gallery.

At age 96, H.S. Picker is producing some of her most vibrant work. She explains, “I continue to paint every day with passion and joy. I hope the viewer enjoys the results.” One of the most immediately noticeable characteristics of H.S. Picker’s work is its vibrancy of color. Warm corals and yellows share a happy composition with fresh greens and cool blues. A lavender sky provides a calming backdrop to a Granny Apple hill, and a larger-than-life bird – colored by most of the hues of a rainbow – soars over a dwarfed, peaceful neighborhood scene. This is a mere glimpse at H.S. Picker’s current body of work and collectors and art enthusiasts alike are invited to view the artist’s latest pieces at Waxlander.

Kapp, H.S. Picker and other notable figures are binding together to support Tobias Picker’s latest outstanding accomplishment. For additional information regarding Phyllis Kapp’s upcoming engagement, please call Bonnie French at Waxlander Gallery, 505-984-2202.
