Touching Souls International is pleased to report that philanthropist Sheonty Sultan has been the financial figure behind an eye camp in Munshigonj, Bangladesh. The outreach screened 1156 patients for cataracts and 67 patients received free cataract surgery. In addition, 331 patients got needed eye medicines and 279 patients received needed eyeglasses. The Touching Souls International eyesight and blindness prevention projects have operated since 2005. They began with a similar eye camp held in the village Banial, Bangladesh.The project has a goal of offering cataract surgeries with lens implant at no charge for the people of Bangladesh. People of the country have significant problems with cataracts. In most cases, the condition is curable, with proper care. The cost of cataract surgery is high and financially unavailable to most people of the country. Those who have developed cataracts may remain blind throughout their lifetime so they remain a burden for families and for the society as a whole.
Writing about eye health, Sheonty Sultan says that Bangladesh has around 750,000 blind people and cataracts are the main reason in four out of five cases. Other conditions are macular degeneration and uncorrected aphakia. The lack of trained eye health personnel and poor public awareness about cataracts is the reason why there are a limited number of surgeries for cataracts.
Hundreds of cataract surgeries have been done since the inception of the project. The overall mission is to eradicate curable blindness in Bangladesh. The contribution of Sheonty Sultan is a significant help in expanding help to economically disadvantaged areas of Bangladesh. The TSI project works in co-operation with Bangladesh National Blind Society.
According to a spokesperson for Touching Souls International, “Philanthropy such as that provided by Sheonty Sultan, is not only about giving wealth for a noble cause. It also is designed to inspire others to follow it as well. TSI has tried to follow the dream and bring a change to the lives of thousands of disadvantaged individuals in Third World countries.”
