Results from a new global shopping survey revealed that information accessed on smartphones is having a major influence on the way consumers shop and purchase. According to the survey, 37% of shoppers use their mobile devices to seek product information, while 30% use smartphones to compare prices. “This most recent study confirms what we have been experiencing when it comes to mobile shopping trends. More specifically, 50% of Canadians own a smartphone, with the majority (54%) using them to help inform their purchasing decisions. Of these Canadian shoppers, 17% said they look up product information, 31% compared prices online before making a purchase, and 13% searched for product reviews in-store; as a result, 12% of Canadian shoppers said they changed their in-store shopping decision because of information they accessed on their smartphone. “Thanks to tough economic conditions and increased competition, Canadians are becoming less brand loyal,” Cosgrove adds. “In fact, 81% of Canadians say they look for ways to cut back on everyday spending and 79% say they often postpone buying something until they get a good deal.”
Canadian businesses looking to take advantage of the growing mobile marketplace need to adapt their online content marketing and advertising efforts; that could mean making sure their web site is optimized for use across all platforms. Cosgrove explains that for web sites to rank higher on search engines such as Google and Yahoo!, brands also need to ensure online content is current, informative, and fresh.
