The event, which bills itself as the fifth slam of the season, will bring together some of the very finest players from the ATP and WTA. Packed stands and a huge global audience are pretty much a certainty for this year's Miami event.Novak Djokovic will be aiming to extend his reign of dominance at Crandon Park in the ATP draw. The Serb has won the last two editions of the Sony Open and remains the man to beat this year in the ATP. Andy Murray and Juan Martin Del Potro are the two men who stand out as his biggest rivals.
Murray, who finished as the runner-up at the Australian Open, is currently in great form. His place at the top table in men’s tennis is no longer questionable following his US Open triumph in 2012. As for Del Potro, he beat Djokovic and Murray at the BNP Paribas Open last week and came within a whisker of winning the title.
The chasing pack contains an array of household names. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych will all be participating here in Florida. The form of Berdych has been eye-catching in 2013, whilst Tsonga can be a formidable opponent at his best.
In the WTA, world No. 1 Serena Williams will be setting her sights on a sixth career Miami Masters title. Defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska will have intentions of stopping her though. Aga is playing well and is undoubtedly one of the WTA’s finest, though the strength of the draw knocks her down the pecking order a little. She’ll also have to deal with Maria Sharapova, who recently surged into the No. 2 ranking spot following a title success in Indian Wells.
Other players to look out for in the WTA include hardcourt specialists such as Petra Kvitova, Sam Stosur and Mona Barthel. Na Li, Angelique Kerber and Sara Errani are also players with a good chance of featuring in the latter stages of this year’s Sony Open.
