According to density map data in the 2011 Annual Traffic Crash Report, most of Albuquerque’s accidents occurred at and around major intersections, particularly those near the interstates. The largest area of concern, however, is the area around the city center. The area bordered by 4th, Carlisle, Central and Lomas showed a very high density of accidents.
Among the major roads I-25 had high rates with intersections near Paseo del Norte, San Mateo and Bridge. I-40 saw smaller densities overall, but trouble spots still appeared at most major roads, with Coors and San Mateo showing the largest number of collisions. The interchange also supports a large number of accidents as traffic merges at high speed. Other areas of concern were Coors and Paseo del Norte and the area near Alameda and Ellison near Rio Rancho.
“Unsurprisingly, the most congested areas also see the greatest rates of accidents. However, just a bit of extra caution can make a huge difference and reduce your chances of being involved in a crash,” concludes Szantho.
