Mullen & Mullen, a Dallas law firm recognizes the hard work and determination of a car accident survivor who lost her arm with a scholarship award to help her continue in her college career.

Albany, New York May 4, 2018 – On March 1st, 2002, Desiree Graziano’s day began just like any other, but it wouldn’t be until 18 days later, on March 19th, that she would regain consciousness, only to find her left arm amputated. Desiree was waiting for her then-boyfriend to arrive so they could go out to dinner with friends.

Surprised that he didn’t show up, she decided to drive to his house to see what was happening. At 8:25 PM, while driving on County Route 26A, she swerved to miss a deer that jumped into the road. While she didn’t hit the deer, she did strike a telephone pole. Though she remembers none of it, Desiree flew out the back window of her car as it rolled.

She awoke 18 days later on March 19th after being in a medically induced coma while in intensive care. She asked her mom to scratch her left arm, but then realized it was no longer there. If her arm hadn’t been amputated, she would have died from “necrotizing fasciitis,” a flesh-eating bacterial disease. 22 at the time, and with a four-year-old son, she was understandably horrified of how she would move forward in life.

Despite her missing left arm causing frequent and intense pain on her left side to the point where she couldn’t sleep, Desiree was resilient enough to work as a nurse for another seven years. After being laid off from her job in 2014 due to a company takeover, Desiree decided it was time to make a change.

She will soon have her Associate’s degree in business after making the Dean’s List all four semesters with a cumulative GPA of 3.52. Next, she plans to get her Bachelor’s in Healthcare Management and Public Health. And during all of this, she’s been a volunteer on the Board of Directors at Columbia Pathways to Recovery, an addiction rehab clinic.

“Desiree has shown an intense degree of grit and determination in the midst of catastrophic life obstacles. I don’t know that I would be able to do the same in her circumstances. I wish her the best because she deserves every bit of this $1,000 scholarship,” said Regis Mullen.

There’s no doubt Desiree has a bright future ahead of her. With her relentlessness in the face of adversity and kind and caring heart, she’s certain to make a positive difference in the world.
