Western Slope Sleep Center (WSSC) announced today that it is now offering new treatments for sleep apnea that do not require the patient to use a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine. Instead, with a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD), patients can enjoy proper breathing while sleeping using a device that gently holds their lower jaw forward.“Sleep apnea is a far more serious health problem than many people realize,” said Dan Drakulich, DDS, President of WSSC. “However, not everyone can sleep while wearing a mask that’s hooked up to a machine forcing air into their mouths. The mandibular device is a great alternative for those seeking sleep apnea treatment in Montrose Colorado.”
Sleep apnea is a medical condition wherein the patient’s airways get obstructed during sleep, typically by movement of the tongue or constriction of the throat. The superficial result is snoring, though the patient is actually not breathing during apnea episodes. These can occur up to 50 times per hour. Over the course of a night’s sleep, the patient is essentially suffocating.
The results include exhaustion, but it’s much worse in reality: Sleep disorders are currently linked to high blood pressure, fatigue (and fatigue-related accidents), weight gain, frequent headaches, acid reflux (persistent heartburn), diabetes, and an increased risk for heart attack and stroke, among many others. “Uninterrupted sleep with adequate oxygen flow is your body’s number one defense against numerous health problems,” added Dr. Drakulich, who goes by “Dr. Dan.”
