An international music contest featuring world renowned GlobalBeat Bands. From orchestrated performances to dance music - ‚creole’ has gone GLOBAL!

To celebrate the 25th birthday, WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN, long established as an internationally renowned festival organiser and Berlin’s premier venue for global music invites to the first international ‘creole’ event.

‘creole’ is a unique, well established contest featuring renowned performers who are influenced by intriguing transcultural experiences, from orchestrated performances, to dance music and fusion. The contest has been running for the last 12 years, but until now it was only open to performers with residency in Germany. Now, for the very first time contestants from around the world are invited to enter ‘creole global’.

Philippa Ebéné (Managing Director and Artistic Director of WEKSTATT DER KULTUREN) explains, “for the last 12 years ‘creole’ has gone from strength to strength and we have had more and more enquiries from abroad, which we could not accept when the competition was regional ‘creole’ due to the rules and regulations. We are very excited to now open the competition to international bands as it takes ‘creole’ to a worldwide audience. The original ‚creole Berlin Brandenburg’ always had a global spirit, featuring artists who draw their skills and influences from diverse sources and the musical fusion they create, and as ‘creole global’ continues to develop organically, we now have the opportunity to invite even more world class artists to perform at the WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN”.

In total 77 applications arrived from Germany, France, Italy, Burkina Faso, Mauritius, Iran, Austria and Switzerland. All applications were from bands with solid craftsmanship and expertise; bands with the ability to create unbelievable fusions, collaborate styles and deliver compositions influenced by Worldmusic and Worldjazz.

“The numerous first-class applications overwhelmed us completely and did not make the pre-selection process easy” explains the chairwoman of the jury Bisseh Akamé from Universal Music.

This resulted in the judges making the unprecedented decision to open the contest up to 18 bands instead of the original 14. “We cannot wait to experience the varied range of bands from orchestral to dance music during their 20 minutes live performances at the ‘creole global’ contest", says Akamé.

The judges of the 1st ‘creole global’ are Bisseh Akamé (Universal), Louna Abou (tunesisters Entertainment), Nils Kreutzfeldt (F-Cat-Productions), David Michaud (Cully Jazz Festival) and Frederic Velasques (Dussmann Das KulturKaufhaus GmbH).
A tough bunch to impress. Can the artists convince the judges that they can put on a show, have stage presence and enthusiasm? Have they got what it takes to progress through the competition stages?
The winner will headline in the show’s finale.

Creole is the only Global Music Contest in Germany, and was created in 2006 by the
WERKSTATT DER KULTUREN Berlin originally with the objective of offering world music made
in Berlin Brandenburg with its many facets to a larger audience.
