Washington DC Police Host Community Engagement Bike Ride to Boost Safety

Metropolitan Police Department will roll out with community members in a community bike ride on new bikes with top bike safety features, but are missing bike cell phone holders, says industry expert.

The Metropolitan Police Department will host a community bike ride to increase community engagement and raise awareness about bike safety on November 29, 2015. The event will see 18 MPD officers riding their new mountain bikes, with numerous special safety features. Those features include flashing lights, sirens, high beams and rechargeable batteries, as well as water bottle cages and other bike accessories. One important safety feature that appears to be missing, says a bike safety expert, is a bike cell phone mount.

“Police officers are prime candidates for bike cell phone mounts,” the expert told a group of reporters. “These days, they depend on their smart phones as much as they do on two-way radios for instant communication and access to records and route information.”

The community bike ride is part of a push by the Metropolitan District Police to involve and engage the community, which reacted with alarm after Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a plan to increase police presence on the streets of the Capitol City. Police Chief Cathy Bowser and Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes came up with the idea of a community bike ride to bring police officers and community together over a shared love of bicycling.

According to a police department spokesman, there will be six bike officers each from three of the city’s most troubled districts riding alongside community members. The police officers will be riding their new Volcanic Vx9 10-speed mountain bikes, outfitted with multiple safety and signaling devices. The route will cover 15 miles and the ride is expected to last 2 1/2 hours. Community cyclists will have to supply their own bicycles, and will be required to wear helmets in order to participate.

If they get a good turnout, the department spokesman said, the MPD will host more rides, as well as other bike activities, including activities geared toward children.

Washington, D. C. is among the most bike-friendly cities in the country, so the department hopes that community members will turn out in force to enjoy some exercise and a friendly activity where they can get to know their community officers.

“Hopefully, at some point, they’ll also discuss the importance of bike accessories like bike cell phone mounts like My Ride Gripper,” the bike safety instructor said. “With the number of daily riders who rely on their iPhones and smart phones for everything from fitness and route information to music, handlebar cell phone mounts are rapidly becoming a must-have bike safety accessory.”
