During his service, Stuehmeyer would see action in France, Germany, and Austria. He earned the first of his three Bronze Stars during the Rhine Offensive. In April 1945, Stuehmeyer along with the 42nd Division helped liberate 30,000 prisoners being held Dachau, a concentration camp created by Adolf Hitler.
