Venture Computers of Canada, Inc. releases its top 5 tips for troubleshooting printer problems.

Venture Computers of Canada, Inc. (www.Venture.ca), Toronto’s leading provider of IT support, hardware and software sales and services, and consulting, is detailing five expert printer troubleshooting tips that can be useful in getting a printer working again.

“Having a printer not working to full capacity can be a pain when trying to run an efficient business, especially when printing is a core operational function of the company. That’s why a business needs its printers to be not only working, but operating at a high level,” says Harris Tan, owner of Venture Computers of Canada, Inc. “While printers can be frustrating, getting around those aggravations is key to keeping up efficiency.”

Tan explains that while slow printers are a top complaint, it’s an issue that can be alleviated by reducing the print quality for files and other outputs that are printed daily. Trying to print pages on web sites without graphics is also an option that would require adding RAM to the printer, if possible.

“Saving money is always a concern and ink toners can get expensive. The best way around this is to purchase cartridges with higher page yields,” he adds. “A solid page yield for an ink cartridge would be about 250 pages and about 2,000 pages for a toner cartridge. If one is going to pay a higher cost, they might as well get the most for their money.”

One of the most annoying printer mishaps is when files go to the wrong printer, which happens sometimes when software is upgraded. However, according to Tan, it’s an easy fix; just click the start icon and, under the “Printers and Faxes” heading, click the preferred default printer.

“A paper jam is also a common and aggravating problem; in fact, it sometimes just happens no matter what you do. But in most instances, fixing the problem it’s as simple as opening the paper tray and adjusting the misaligned paper,” he observes. “And if the light keeps on blinking even though no misaligned paper is inside of the tray, the tray may actually have too much paper or the positioning of the paper may not be straight.”

“Finally, one of the problems we’ve heard recently is that pictures are not coming out great,” Tan concludes. “First, photo paper should always be used, not regular print paper. Then be sure the settings are not set to plain paper or the quality will be lousy, no matter which paper is used.”
