Dr. Manon Bolliger of Bowen College in Vancouver BC, has released a report covering health care’s moral responsibility to help prevent and treat COVID-19. The report explores the role of complementary health care practitioners and in particular the role of Naturopaths in supporting Canada’s Public Health Agencies.

The release states that according to the federal government of Canada, no products or therapies have been approved to prevent or treat COVID-19. The public health agency’s main recommendations are to self-monitor and self-isolate. If one is awaiting results from a COVID-19 test or has symptoms the recommendation is to go into immediate quarantine.

The only suggestions that the public health officials have been able to agree on for the prevention of COVID-19 include washing hands, avoid touching the face, avoid contact with sick people, cover the mouth, stay home, and clean and disinfect surfaces regularly.

The report brings out the many other health ramifications that may occur with various issues such social isolation, the demands of a change in habits, and various perspectives of and re-evaluation of what individual and collective values should be in this pandemic environment.

Dr. Bollinger reports in this release that she found one statement by the College of Naturopathic Physicians of BC particularly troubling. They issued a notice to the public last week. It states that statements by naturopaths about COVID-19, beyond the information made available by the government, are “inappropriate, potentially harmful, and likely to violate college policies on false misleading advertising.”

This report asks many pointed questions of the College of Naturopathic Physicians. For instance, naturopathy knows that proper nutrition, vitamins, sleep, movement, fascial stretching at home, Bowen Therapy, exercise, meditation, and mindfulness all boost the immune system. She asks pointedly if this is being the case shouldn’t the naturopathic community share it with the population.

This penetrating release asks the questions most are afraid to broach and should be read by anyone with an interest in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19
