With Canadian meteorologists forecasting a significantly warmer-than-average summer for 2018, it appears that many Saskatoon residents are beginning to plan their summer camping trips earlier than normal. While July and August are typically peak months for camping demand, more Saskatchewan residents are looking at June this year for their annual trips due to the predicted temperature highs throughout the summer months. Anecdotal evidence suggests that Saskatoon campsites are booking up earlier this year as compared to last, implying that more residents are itching to get their new and used travel trailers out of storage before the nights get unreasonably hot.
There are other benefits to camping earlier in the season, apart from more reasonable temperatures. A long and damp winter has created conditions ideal for bugs, as has been seen in previous years with similar winters. May and June remain the best time for the bug-averse to camp, seeing as insect colonies are generally fewer in number in these early summer months. In addition to the ideal weather and bug conditions, low demand in the months before school lets out leaves a comparatively higher number of open campsites than in July or August.
One of the oldest dealers of new and used travel trailers in the area has certainly noticed an earlier-than-usual uptick in sales due to the weather. Lardners Trailer Sales (which has been in business since 1962) typically sees sales begin to peak in late June and early July, in line with consumers looking to get ready for their late-summer trips. A spokesperson for the company recently reported that this year, “sales have begun to peak much earlier in the season than normal — Lardners is actually bringing in a great deal more inventory than normal in order to keep up with demand”.
