This week, the TRU Blanket, a newly designed weighted blanket, wraps up its second successful run on Kickstarter. The Kickstarter campaign was timed so some bidders would be able to get their blankets by Christmas. This run of the TRU Blanket is in a 20 pound size, as compared to the initial series released this summer in a 15 pound size.
“We know that Christmas shopping season is a stressful time of year, so we thought, why not just own that? Everyone is thinking about how cold it is, how they can’t sleep, and how they are stressed. The holidays are a lot of fun, but they’re also exactly why we need a weighted blanket designed for this day and age,” said Jason Spahr, the designer of the TRU Blanket and CEO of TRU Lite Bedding
Weighted blankets are a therapeutic tool that has gained popularity in recent years. The heavy blanket is purported to create a sense of calm in users by way of a phenomenon called Deep Pressure Touch. The sensation of the extra weight may have a beneficial effect on hormone levels that relate to stress and the body’s ability to fall asleep and help to maintain a positive mood.
Users of weighted blankets are typically advised to find a blanket that is around 10% of their body weight, but sometimes users want a little more body weight. The 20 pound weight was released in response to user polls that suggested that many previous buyers wanted the heavier weight for various reasons.
The 20 pound TRU Blanket Kickstarter campaign was fully funded within 24 hours. The initial TRU Blanket reached its goal by the end of the first day, also. Spahr noted that the benefits of a crowdfunding campaign give creators a chance to decide if a product is viable before investing a lot of capital into a product without much demand on the market.
There are only a few days remaining on the crowdfunding campaign. There are tiers that will be released and shipped in time to arrive for Christmas. There are also less expensive bid tiers that will begin shipment in March.
