When asked to comment, Weinman said, “Dissolving a marriage can bring with it extreme feelings of loss or anxiety, particularly for children. Here are some useful tips that will help you guide your kids through the divorce process.”
Having an inclusive discussion with your kids about the divorce is crucial to their mental well-being.
“If possible, both parents should be present for the ‘divorce talk,’ instead of each parent having separate conversations with the kids. The information presented should also be easy for them to understand. The simpler the explanation, the better.”
She added that it's always a good idea for parents to tell their kids that they are in no way at fault for the divorce.
“Discussions will lay the groundwork for open communication throughout the divorce and separation”, Weinman says, particularly when it comes to custody arrangements.
"One crucial way to help your child through the separation process is to let them know in advance of any change in living arrangements. In addition to keeping your children in the loop, you can also allow them to furnish the new home, which can help them feel like they have some control in their lives," she said.
Part of ongoing and open-ended communication is to encourage your kids to express their feelings.
“Divorces are also difficult on parents, but the last thing you want to do is to make it seem like you're unavailable when your child is upset. Make sure to tell them that you are there for them and that it's ok for them to feel and talk about any emotion," she commented.
One common pitfall to avoid is badmouthing your ex for the sake of your children.
When asked to elaborate, Weinman stated, “Many parents fall into the trap of talking poorly about their former spouse in front of their children. However, this will make your children feel like they must express loyalty to one parent and will hinder any discussion of their feelings."
When children are going through a stressful situation such as divorce, Weinman says, it’s not uncommon for them to act out or exhibit behavioral changes.
“Always keep in mind that children react in their own ways to their family separating, and they require ongoing support. In addition to using these tips, consulting a family expert or therapist might also be a good idea for further guidance," Weinman said.
