When asked to comment, Hershman said, “Unfortunately, as COVID-19 ramped up around the country, so did the number of domestic violence cases as a result of lockdown measures to stem the spread of the virus.”

He continued by saying, "More often than not, many people underestimate how serious a domestic violence charge can be in the state of Washington. With much of the system stacked against them, many innocent people are found guilty of a domestic violence charge, which has long-lasting negative implications."

One thing that the majority of the American public doesn’t know, according to Hershman, is that law enforcement is required to make an arrest if they believe that an incidence of domestic violence has occurred.

When asked to explain further, he said, “In the state of Washington, a police officer is required to make an arrest if they have cause to believe that someone has broken a protective order or assaulted a household member – and the police officer can do this without a warrant.”

"This is the point at which you could be accused of domestic violence, and the charge could land you in jail until the court date, or you could be hit with a protective order. All of this is to say that the second you are charged with a domestic violence offense, you could be legally cut off from your family or loved ones," he said.

Anyone convicted of a domestic violence offense will face severe repercussions, which are often hard to recover from, according to Hershman.

When asked for more details, he commented, "A domestic violence conviction comes with a criminal record, which will affect both social and professional aspects of life. For instance, after being convicted, it'll be extremely difficult to find employment or housing. It's quite possible that you could lose your job after being convicted of domestic violence."

He continued by saying, “Furthermore, you could be stripped of your professional license if convicted. Oftentimes, the professional board that issued you the license will review your case and decide accordingly if your license should be revoked."

The upside, according to Hershman, is that a seasoned defense attorney can make a big difference in helping their defendant receive the best outcome possible.

“It’s crucial that you research and retain qualified legal counsel who will work tirelessly on your behalf to help either walk away without a criminal record or mitigate the negative consequences of a domestic violence charge,” he said.
