'Tom in America' With Two Academy Award Nominees Premieres At Palm Springs 2014

Academy Award Nominees Burt Young and Sally Kirkland star in “Tom in America” to make World Premiere at PALM SPRINGS International Film Festival 2014.

Oscar nominees Burt Young and Sally Kirkland star in the Flavio Alves’ film Tom in America which will have it’s world premiere at the 2014 Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Two of the most recognizable stars in film take on the roles of Michael and Betty, a couple whose happy 50-year marriage is rocked when Michael finds a provocative Tom of Finland doll triggering his long buried desires. Suddenly, the couple is faced with difficult questions about themselves, their relationship and their future.

The film is formally endorsed by the “Tom of Finland” Foundation and marks Burt Young’s first career role as a gay man.

The director and stars will be on hand for a live Q&A session following the premiere’s screening on Tuesday, June 17th at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Young believes audiences “will react with tenderness” to Tom in America. Kirkland agrees, “I think the film will touch people’s hearts.”

“Burt Young and I have a long history being with the Actors Studio, Kirkland said. “It was thrilling to act with him. He’s brilliant. The whole cast was wonderful.”

Other notable cast members include Alex Kruz from the multiple award winning Native American film "Red Cloud: Deliverance" which currently plays at Comic Con events around America.

Mr. Young’s credits include: “Rocky” 1-5 with Sylvester Stallone, “Once upon A time in America” with Robert De Niro, “New York I Love You” with Natalie Portman, “Mickey Blue Eyes” with James Caan and “China Town” with Jack Nicholson.

Ms. Kirkland’s credits include: “JFK” with Kevin Costner, “Bruce Almighty” with Jim Carrey, “Blazing Saddles” with Gene Wilder, “EdTV” with Matthew McConaughey and “Factory Girl” with Guy Pearce and Jimmy Fallon.

Flavio Alves is a Brazilian writer, film director, and producer. He was granted political asylum in the United States in 1998 with the help of the Immigrants and Refugee Rights Clinic at New York University's School of Law. Shortly thereafter, he attended Columbia University, where he earned an undergraduate degree in Political Science. After graduating, Alves worked as an assistant to then-New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Former Congressman Anthony Weiner (D-NY).
In 2007, Alves returned to school to study film production at New York University, where he received the Technisphere Award for Outstanding Achievement. Since then, he has directed and produced more than ten films, including The Position directed by Kevin Stocklyn; The Art Machine, directed Doug Karr; and The Secret Friend. Alves' work has entered more than 80 film festivals and has received more than 20 awards.
