Acclaimed Course Suffered No Damage in Brush With Hurricane Florence
CHERRY GROVE, S.C. — The heart of Myrtle Beach’s peak fall golf season has arrived and one of the Grand Strand’s premier courses – Tidewater Golf Club – is welcoming golfers with pristine conditions.
Hurricane Florence came ashore just north of Wilmington, N.C., but spared the Myrtle Beach golf community and Tidewater, in particular, the worst of its impact. The course closed for a couple days in the aftermath of the storm for cleanup but the layout was undamaged and the feared storm surge never materialized.
“Our thoughts and prayers are obviously with the people most affected by Hurricane Florence, but we were very fortunate here at Tidewater,” said Chris Cooper, the course’s general manager. “We are in as good a shape as we have been all year. From tee to green our conditioning is nearly flawless, and the views are as stunning as ever.”
With eight holes that play along either Cherry Grove Inlet or the Intracoastal Waterway, the scenery at Tidewater is unforgettable. Holes three and 12 are par 3s set along the inlet, and they are among the most memorable one-shotters in the state. The 13th green offers a view of the Atlantic Ocean and the 4th hole, a gentle dogleg left that plays around Cherry Grove, is arguably the best par 4 in Myrtle Beach.
The quality of the Tidewater experience has been further highlighted by the glowing post-Florence reviews it has received.
“The course was in great shape. The greens were perfect,” a golfer wrote in a 4.5-star evaluation on October 1.
