Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center (805-557-9930) has launched Inspire Therapy, an FDA-approved upper airway therapy device to treat obstructive sleep apnea. The user-controlled device is implanted under the skin and improves the natural process of breathing.

The groundbreaking sleep apnea device regulates the movement of the tongue and the muscles that control the airway. Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center of Thousand Oaks has launched Inspire Therapy for those who cannot tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) devices.

The Southern California Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders Medical Center now provides Inspire upper airway stimulation therapy that works from within the body.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that results in the temporary collapse of the airway during sleep. The narrowing or complete closure of the airway is due to the temporary and involuntary relaxation of muscles in the tongue or soft palate. Common symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, sudden wakefulness, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

Inspire therapy at the Thousand Oaks OSA treatment center involves the implantation of a breathing sensor and a stimulation lead. The implantation is a safe and convenient outpatient procedure. A handheld external pulse generator controls the stimulation lead implant.

The Inspire Therapy device generates mild stimulations that are barely noticeable. The stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve moves the tongue and surrounding muscles, clearing the airway and helping users experience deep, uninterrupted sleep. Because it works internally, the system offers better results than CPAP, which limits movement and flexibility.
