Therapy Group Expands Innovative Practice into Nyc

Therapy Group of NYC offers specialized psychotherapy for a second busy, stressed city.

Since 2003, Therapy Group of DC has helped thousands of District-area individuals overcome challenges such as poor mental health, failing relationships, and struggling careers. Now they’ve brought that same effective, straightforward, and highly accessible mental health care to New York City.

“Like D.C., New York City has a history of embracing therapy and understanding the immense benefits that counseling offers,” says Brad Brenner, Ph.D., who with Keith Clemson, Ph.D. has expanded Therapy Group of DC into a thriving practice of 18 mental health professionals. “Our mission in D.C. has been to simplify the process of obtaining quality psychotherapy, and that mission extends to our new practice in NYC.”

Among the many differentiators of Therapy Group of NYC’s practice is to push the field forward by training the next generation of professional therapists. They have developed two advanced training programs in Washington, D.C. One is a psychology externship, which leverages the enthusiasm and talent of up-and-coming doctoral students to work with patients at a reduced fee through The Capital Therapy Project. The second is a postdoctoral training program, which attracts applications from around the country from highly talented therapists who are looking to further their training and better understand how private practice can be a catalyst to better communities.

“New Yorkers are always forward-thinking, and we know this city will be excited about and supportive of our efforts to professionally train and develop new therapists,” Brenner says. “Not only are we providing an immersive, rigorous, and encouraging environment for these therapists to work and grow, but we’re also addressing and trying to alleviate the severe shortage of highly skilled mental health professionals our country is facing right now.”

Therapy Group of NYC offers flexible, highly personalized treatment for the issues New Yorkers face as part of their dynamic, demanding lifestyles, including anxiety, depression, relationship and career problems, LGBTQ+ challenges, diversity and cultural identity, grief and loss, sexuality, and many others. They use a variety of approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic/psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The group’s NYC office is led by Dr. Brenner and Dr. Clemson. Brenner earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado, a master’s from the University of Cambridge, and his doctorate at the University of Maryland. Clemons graduated from Bradley University with a bachelor’s degree, and earned his master’s from the University of Missouri and doctorate from Saint Louis University.
