Mojito Muddler and U.S. rum aficionados, with the untangling of decades of embargo polictics with Cuba, are enthralled with the possibility of legally purchasing Cuban rum … in particular, Havana Club rum.
A muddler is a wooden, plastic, or stainless steel bar tool used to mush herbs and fruits for alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. “Boat Drinks,” made famous by a Jimmy Buffet song, is generally used to describe fruity, umbrella cocktails. The most famous boat drink, the “Mojito,” was an Ernest Hemingway favorite and uses white rum, sugar, muddled limes, muddled mint leaves, and carbonated water. The Mojito Muddler is a new bamboo muddler created using traditional styling and current technology. It is currently a best seller on Amazon. Their website includes Hemmingway’s reported favorite mojito recipe, which includes using Havana Club white rum.
Havana Club rum was created in 1935 by a Cuban family which eventually fled the Castro revolution. Shortly after the revolution in 1959, the Cuban government seized the Havana Club distillery, without compensation. They then began a partnership with the French company Pernard Ricard, which distilled and sold the rum from Cuba. Bacardi, now the third largest rum maker in the world, also had its assets expropriated by the Cuban regime. They purchased the American “Havana Club” trademark from the original family in 1997. For the last 2 decades a legal battle has ensued for control of the brand. Loosening trade relationships between the U.S. and Cuba means Havana Club might be available soon in the United States. But from which company? The answer may involve billions of dollars.
Though Bacardi declined to discuss the potential upcoming conflict, they did comment. “Regarding the diplomatic actions yesterday, we will need to wait and see what the impacts are. We hope for meaningful improvements in the lives of the Cuban people and will follow any changes with great interest,” the company said in a statement. “In the meantime, we continue to support the restoration of fundamental human rights in Cuba.”
