Orange, VA – On Monday, May 13th, a California jury concluded that Monsanto’s Roundup product caused a couple to develop cancer after they used the product for thirty years. The Pilliods, represented by the Miller Firm LLC, won their case, and Monsanto has been ordered to pay the couple a sum of $2.055 billion in damages.
There are currently 13,000 cases pending in court relating to the spray’s suspected carcinogenic properties. It is also thought to cause other serious illnesses. To date only three cases have gone to trial. The latest case against Monsanto and RoundUp to make it to trial was the Pilliod case. Alva Pilliod, 76, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011 and his wife, Alberta Pilliod was diagnosed with the same disease in 2015.
The couple maintained three properties for over three decades in which they sprayed Roundup weed and grass killer throughout the year. Their lawyer, Michael Miller, stated that they sprayed this herbicide on their properties an estimated 1500 days over the three decades. The couple stated as part of their defense that if they had seen a warning label or knew the product was harmful, they wouldn’t have used it; but RoundUp is sold with no such warnings. Monsanto denied any wrongdoing, claiming that the Pilliod’s cancer was due to already existing factors like smoking and previous health issues.
Lead Attorney Michael Miller represented the couple, offering his 30 years of experience in taking on large corporations who fail to warn about the dangers of their products. Of the Pilliod’s success in the trial, Mike Miller shared the following words:
“We are happy for the Pilliods and appreciate the jury’s service. This jury was appropriately convinced that RoundUp causes cancer and Monsanto had hid it for over 40 years. We will continue to vigorously represent our clients until justice is done for all.”
