Fat pad atrophy is the loss of the fat cushioning in the balls of the feet. This leads to pain while walking, often starting with the sensation of having a rock in the shoe. Fat pad atrophy is fat tissue breakdown that does not repair or reverse with time. For patients at The Center for Morton’s Neuroma, lipostem is a simple, non-surgical solution that can be completed in a single, painless visit. First, the patient's blood is taken from the arm and is centrifuged (spun at high speed) to separate the platelet-rich plasma. While the blood is spinning, a small amount of fat is taken from the patient’s buttocks in a mini liposuction procedure. This is done under a local anesthetic and is completely painless. The fat is also processed on site and is then injected, with the plasma, into the fat pad area under ultrasound guidance. The whole process takes between 1 and 2 hours and full recovery takes up to 4 weeks but the results will last.
