The Cannes Starter’s Guide: solid advice for people attending Cannes for the first time

A new guide offers first-time business visitors to Cannes the advice they need for making the most of their trip. More than a travel guide, the Cannes Starter's Guide brings people to their first appointment and beyond.

Cannes is home to some of the world’s most important trade fairs, from the spectacular Cannes Film Festival and Market, to the real estate fair MIPIM and the so-called “content” industry fairs such as MIPCOM, MIPTV and Midem.

For 5 years, Cannes-or-Bust.com has been providing insider tips and news to help professional visitors make more of their time there. With the Cannes Starter’s Guide, its editor Michael Leahy is now offering 17 years of advice in a short to-the-point guide which falls just in time for the Cannes Film Festival and Market 2014. It is, however, just as relevant for trade fairs such as MIPIM, MIPTV & MIPCOM, Cannes Lions and Midem.

“I remember attending Cannes for the first time and being totally mystified,” he remembers. “I basically turned up and did what I could. That’s not the best way to do it when you are in the same room as the industry's most important players.”

The Cannes Starter’s Guide offers clear advice on:
•How to set goals that are realistic and achievable
•How to get from the airport for under €10
•How to spend far, far less for your hotels
•How to analyse the people you need to meet
•What to do if you get two requests for appointments at the same time
•How to pitch in 25 words or less (and how to keep the pitch going for 20 minutes if necessary)
•The 4 things you must know before pitching a TV format or movie idea at Cannes
•How to work any contacts made in Cannes to boost the return on investment.

The Cannes Starter’s Guide brings readers from being seated in front of their computer to their first meeting on the Croisette - even if they have never attended a trade fair before. The goal is to enable people to hit the ground running. Although the Guide contains money-saving travel tips, the focus is far more on actually doing business in Cannes – including the vital tips about pitching to busy professionals and getting precious feedback even when the pitch fails.

The guide was written by a 17-year veteran of different Cannes events. Irishman Michael Leahy, who was worked every aspect of Cannes, from PR to pitching movie ideas to running booths for companies is the editor of Cannes or Bust.com.
