It’s surprising how many mistakes marketers make with their HTML email campaigns. ReactorEmails, a new HTML email design service for MarketDeveloper clients wants to set the record straight by identifying 5 reasons why HTML emails fail.

Marketers don’t need to look far for powerful HTML email design tools. But they continue to make fundamental design mistakes that are seriously effecting their bottom line profits.

Brian Terry, Creative Director at ReactorEmails.com. A leading expert in HTML email design revealed. “According to a recent HubSpot survey, 88% of people online prefer to read HTML emails and only 12% prefer plain text. Isn’t it time we reveal how people can leverage those numbers better with more effective HTML email design?”.

Brian asks marketers to review these 5 top HTML email design mistakes with their solutions, before creating their next email campaign.

1. No brand recognition
HTML emails should always use instantly recognizable graphics. This helps to build visual brand recognition and loyalty. An easy solution is to design a company header image to use at the top of all HTML emails.

2. Fonts are hard to read
If an HTML email is too hard to read it won’t get read. Avoid using fonts that are too small or don’t translate well to being viewed on a screen. Arial and Verdana are easily the most legible fonts to use.

3. Mixed up information
Having a clear structure to the information makes it easier for the reader to understand and consume. For example clickthrough rates can be improved if attention grabbing headlines are used, followed by short paragraphs of text separated by short “punchy” sub-heads. This also makes emails very easy to consume for the reader.

4. Bad use of colour
Keep the number of colours used to a minimum and avoid garish or florescent colours. The fewer colours a design uses the more visual impact it has on the reader and the easier it will appear to read.

5. Poor quality images
Nothing says “designed by an amateur” more than using free or low-cost clip art. A simple solution is to invest in a small library of relevant images that can be re-used and re-cycled in other marketing materials.
