According to Dr Gary Levin, President of the Florida Society of Rheumatology and a leading researcher in the lupus studies being conducted at CRWF, the new lupus studies conducted in Tampa and Clearwater aim to find more effective medications for the treatment of the condition.
In one of the clinical trials, researchers will test the efficiency of a new product – a BTK inhibitor – for specific individuals with confirmed lupus who are not responding adequately to standard treatments.
Over 5 million people suffer from lupus, which can come in different forms. SLE Lupus is what people are normally referring to when discussing the disease. About half of Lupus patients will develop Lupus Nephritis, a type of inflammation of the kidneys. Cutaneous Lupus, or CLE, is limited to skin rashes and hair loss; it mostly affects women ages 20-50.
