Sweet Licks Custom Guitars, based in Pompano Beach Florida, has added a new series of custom guitars made from the wood of the newly renovated Pompano Beach Pier. The pier, originally built in 1963, needed to be replaced dues to safety concerns resulting from the pier’s weakened condition after decades of extreme heat, humidity, rain, sand and wind. The Pompano Beach Pier also survived multiple heavy storms and even 3 hurricanes…Wilma, Sandy and Katrina.
The Pompano Beach Fishing Village states that the renovated pier area will include restaurants, shopping, a new tiki hut bar! The original Pier had a restaurant at the end of it, which was severely damaged during one of the hurricanes.
“We were looking for a new series of guitars to make and I was walking past the Pompano Beach pier construction site, when I realized the old wood would make a really cool custom guitar, with its fishing heritage and extremely weathered condition”, states Brian Woeller, creator of Sweet Licks Custom Guitars. “When we got the wood, it was hard to find pieces that were not too weathered, or the right size,” says Woeller. “There was also still a large amount of sand still coming out of the wood!”
Electric guitars are typically made from multiple pieces of wood that are glued together and planed to a body block, which is then cut out to whatever shape ids desired. The Sweet Licks Pier Series guitars are also made this way. Some of the bodies are planed down to a smooth finish, while others feature a more rough or craggly texture, glued to mahogany wood for stability.
“These guitars are amazing,” says Sergio Valdes, resident of Pompano Beach. “I love the way the wood looks as if it was just taken off the pier. Very high quality build and a really cool guitar. I’m buying one!”
