OrthoCARE Foot and Ankle Specialist Dr. Nere Onosode: Follow These Steps to Find the Right Fit

IRVING, TX / A recent study by the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society found that 88% of women wear the wrong shoe size. This can lead to foot injuries as well as chronic pain and discomfort in the legs and back. Fortunately, there is an easy solution, says Dr. Nere Onosode, a foot and ankle specialist with OrthoCARE(TM).

"April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, so it's a good time for people to re-evaluate their shoes and pay extra attention to their feet. The single most important thing you can do to improve foot health is to make sure you're wearing the right shoes, and that starts with getting your feet measured," notes Dr. Onosode.

He explains that feet can change in shape or size to adjust for weight gain or loss, pregnancy or a variety of other factors, including the aging process. That's why he suggests people get their feet measured by a foot and ankle specialist or a good shoe store at least once a year -- or more often if shoes become tight.

"Have your feet measured at the end of the day, if possible. Our feet tend to swell during the day, so most people's feet are larger then. Also, most people have one foot that's bigger than the other, so be sure to have both feet measured," advises Dr. Onosode. "But don't select shoes simply by their size. Make sure they feel right too. They shouldn't feel overly tight or loose, and the ball of your foot should fit comfortably in the widest part of the shoe."

To find the right fit, Dr. Onosode also suggests:

- Looking for semi-rigid shoes with a wide toe box and adequate heel cushion. To determine rigidity, try twisting the shoe -- it should have some flexibility but shouldn't twist in the middle.

- Avoiding high heels and flats. High heels can crowd the toes and shift body weight forward -- resulting in foot, leg and back pain. Flats do not provide adequate arch support and can lead to pain encompassing the entire foot and ankle.

- Selecting shoes with good arch support. A good support will span the entire arch and be semi-rigid, so that it doesn't flatten out or collapse when weight is put on it.

- Examining the soles to make sure they have an adequate thickness and grip.

- Trying them. Whether buying a new pair of shoes or re-evaluating an existing pair, people should put them on and walk a few steps, to make sure they fit and feel right.

- Exploring products with the APMA Seal of Acceptance/Approval. The leading resource for foot and ankle health information, the American Podiatric Medical Association is a non-biased, third party that only grants its seals to products that are found to promote good foot health.
