The Run or Dye 5K is an international race in which the participants throw hundreds of pounds of colored corn starch on each other. Events take place in most major cities, but it was the Washington, D.C. race on May 18th in which Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning was chosen to participate to oversee the cleanup after the race.

The corn starch used in the Run or Dye 5K is claimed to be environmentally friendly and easily washed. However, it still has to be cleaned up. Depending on the weather, clumps of corn starch could gather and cause problems for animals and the environment, and most residents of Washington, D.C. would prefer that its streets not be strewn with different shades of colored dust. Races, environmentally friendly or not, also leave a great deal of trash behind such as water bottles, registration papers, food wrappers and other products. Therefore, the cleanup job for this event was of primary importance to people of Washington, D.C. However, with over three miles of road to clean, the task was too big for only a few volunteers.

“That's where Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning comes in,” says Giovanni Recalde, President of Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning, Inc. “We were excited that the folks at Run or Dye 5K called us to help with the cleanup after the Washington D.C. event.”

Exterior cleaning company Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning, serving Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C., was entrusted with removing the colored corn starch and other debris from the race. Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning was able to do the job effectively, using advanced cleaning equipment and trained professionals by coupling truck-mounted street sweeping machines with cleaners wielding backpack blowers, along with some push broom sweeping as well, to make quick work of the after-race mess. This method proved very useful and effective for cleaning up what many people know as the World's Most Colorful 5K. The quick service and skilled staff at Atlantic Sweeping & Cleaning were able to restore the area to a better condition than when the race started in a short amount of time, allowing Washington to maintain business as usual.

“It was definitely a colorful event, even in the cleanup process,” says Recalde. “One of our team members was completely blue by the time we were finished! But we still got it done.”
