The sharing economy has introduced a new generation to bed and breakfast inns, with millennials choosing B&Bs for the unique experience that they can enjoy over chain hotels.However, with thousands of new bed and breakfast businesses around the world advertising through homesharing companies, quality assurance isn't always possible.
These sites are struggling to police their hosts and various accommodation, which can range from licensed businesses to spare rooms in private homes.
Although some properties meet guest expectations for professionalism, cleanliness and safety, there are at least as many that do not.
A 2017 study of 839 reports on third-party review websites found that:
25.2% of reviews complained that listings did not match their descriptions or were unsafe or bug-infested
20.5% of reviews complained of hosts cancelling the stay, which often occurred just 24 hours before arrival or sometimes was even a result of hosts not showing up to greet their guests
15.4% complained of scams, such as demanding extra money from guests
Reviews should help to highlight establishments that are underperforming, but the reality is that people can simply delete their listings and start again.
Even the exact definition of a B&B has proved difficult to pin down.
