The Speyside Way is one of Scotland’s best loved and most popular walks. Challenging, but achievable for those with a reasonable level of fitness, it is one of four official long distance routes in Scotland. The Way brings many walkers and ramblers to this part of the Scottish Highlands, and is sure to see more traffic in the next few weeks when people visit the area to participate in the Moray Walking and Outdoor Festival.
Whilst many walkers enjoy camping and more basic sleeping arrangements, the good news is that there are luxury options available for those who wish to enjoy the great outdoors without compromising on comfort.
One popular option is Culdearn House in Grantown-on-Spey, a 4 star family run small hotel. Owned and operated by William and Sonia Marshall, Culdearn House has received much recognition, including being mentioned in The Good Hotel Guide, Sawdays Special Places, Britains Finest, and The Michelin Guide. Culdearn House is noted for it’s fine dining menu, and selection of whisky (including many distilled locally), making it an ideal choice for those wishing the nourish, refuel , and relax.
For walkers Culdearn House has many maps of the area and invaluable local knowledge, which can make a trip to the hills, forests, and Highland glens, more enjoyable and safer. They also offer drying facilities for clothing and boots, can make up packed lunches, and even transport guests sometimes to Cairngorm, and Rothiemurchus Estate, as public transport is not good in the area, to get somewhere to start. They also offer luggage transfer locally from one accommodation to another.
The Speyside Way runs from Buckie on the shore of the Moray Firth coast of NE Scotland, south westwards to Aviemore on the edge of the Cairngorm Mountains, a distance of approximately 65 miles. Grantown-on-Spey is one of the natural stopping places on the route, and is well served by shops so walkers can stock up on provisions and equipment.
