A new report has been launched designed to help Spanish hoteliers avoid closure in the wake of the global pandemic and the effects it is having on occupancy levels. Hotelient helps independent hotels optimise their revenue and profits and says there are still investment opportunities and strategies that can be implemented to safeguard those in hospitality.

The newly launched report says the end of the summer season also marked one of the most traumatic periods for hoteliers in recent years. During May and June there was optimism, even with reduced bookings, however, with an uncertain winter and second wave taking place across Europe, many hoteliers may not be able to recoup their losses.

Hotelient says that to survive the challenges facing hoteliers over the next 12 months and beyond, radical changes are necessary. The first recommendation is for hoteliers to make their hotel profitable on low occupancy levels or consider closing until the market recovers.

Statistics provided in the report say the new normal is an occupancy rate of around 30% until a vaccine has been discovered and the pandemic over. This is particularly true for hotels in Spain as they are dependent on international tourism.

Other possible side effects of the current global situation include yet unknown impacts on hotel chains that rent their hotels, employees who are currently furloughed, and what the market will look like in a year or more.

Within the report there are discussions about hotels using technology to reduce employees and increase profitability. While this may not be a practical option in the short to mid-term, it is a good long-term option for those hoteliers who survive the coming months.

A spokesperson said: “Our ability to change to evolve to guest’s needs and requirements is the one attribute that will ensure our survival and growth once the pandemic retreats by the end of 2021. In the meantime, we advise hoteliers focus on optimising their business processes, create multi-faceted employees, and create a plan to automate guest services with technology.”
