The Southwestern Counseling Center Expected To Move To New Building On Santa Fe’s Southside In 2015.

The Southwestern Counseling Center has been integral to Southwestern College since 1986. It serves as an affordable place for low-income residents of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico to receive therapy and counseling, and provides an opportunity for students to gain experience working with clients and licensed professionals in a safe and positive environment. Now the school is planning to move the center from its current location on St. Michael’s Drive to land right next to the school on Santa Fe’s Southside.

“We feel that this move will be of great benefit to both students and the community as a whole,” says Dr. Jim Nolan, President of Southwestern College. “70% of the Counseling Center’s clients are low income, and while the Southside has a higher percentage of low-income residents there are fewer places on that end of town for them to receive therapy services.”

The new building will reside next to the school on 4.3 acres of recently purchased land, and Southwestern College is working with Praxis Architects, Inc. to plan the structure. They are expecting to break ground in Spring of 2015.

When completed, the center is expected to have 10-11 offices, 2 classrooms, art therapy, counseling, alcohol and drug counseling, sand tray/sand play therapy, and will have both student (Counselors-in-training) and graduates of the school providing services. They will also continue to provide a sliding payment scale to accommodate various income levels.

“We’re very excited about the new building and being able to offer services on the Southside,” concludes Nolan. “We expect that this move will have a positive impact among students, staff and the community as a whole.”

For those interested in helping more low-income residents with mental health care costs, donations can be made to the Southwestern Counseling Center. The donations will be applied to covering costs associated with providing services on a sliding scale.

Now in its 35th year, Southwestern College’s motto is Transforming Consciousness through Education. It is a graduate level institution that focuses on counseling and art therapy. Offering a holistic environment for learning, students undergo rigorous academic work that follows national standards for the Counseling and Art Therapy professions while also afforded opportunities for deeply meaningful interaction and sharing.
