— The coronavirus is currently affecting many industries in Hong Kong, one of the most affected industries together with the travel related services are language schools. After the Hong Kong Education Bureau has requested schools to remain closed they are enduring a business decline up to 90%.
French Tutors Hong Kong for example which is one of the leading French schools in Hong Kong has confirmed that their demand for French courses has fallen more than 90%. In the past 3 weeks since the coronavirus outbreak started they have barely received any new enquiry for French lessons. Moreover their school right now is practically at a halt. Most students have stopped having class until further notice and the lessons that are taking place right now are mostly conducted online via Skype. Many of the students attending French lessons are young kids. Kids together with the elderly are the most vulnerable to the virus, that is why they had no choice but to stop all the lessons involving students that were younger than 12 years old. For teenagers and adults the students who accepted are able to follow up with their learning on a video call with their class teacher.
Hong Kong schools are to remain closed at least till the 16th of March 2020. The first announcement from the Education Bureau of the Hong Kong government at the end of January was that schools should remain closed till the 17th of February. This date has been postponed already two times, so it remains still unclear if schools are going to be able to open on 16th of March or there will be a further delay. Given that the virus situation in the past weeks has been getting worse, it can be expected that further delays will be announced up to Easter holiday time. If that is the case, language schools in Hong Kong will have to take a big hit after a hard time experienced already at the second half of 2019 due to the protests that arouse from the polemic Extradition Bill.
